Concordant Reference: Complete Classic Materia Medica 1st Edition is a revised and updated Materia Medica of 1,209 remedies with expanded Sensation, Mind, and Dream sections. Vermeulen has added 362 remedies to his previous Materia Medica, Concordant Materia Medica. Concordant Reference 1st Edition includes family information and chemical formulas based on details from 10 reference Materia Medicas published between 1790 and 1930.

The new Concordant Reference contains more information and more remedies, reflecting recent changes in homeopathic techniques and scientific knowledge. Building upon the foundation of classic Materia Medica by revered authors, this reference bridges the gap to the modern world of contemporary homeopaths, addressing their need for accurate information. The identity of remedy sources has been verified and corrected when necessary.

The book includes:

  • 1,209 remedies including Plants, Animals, Minerals, Chemical compounds, Drugs, Fungi, Protista, Imponderables, Nosodes, Sarcodes, Rocks, and Waters
  • 922 remedies with full, expanded sections (previous version – 847 remedies in 1,600 pages)
  • 287 small and lesser-known remedies from Boericke. These remedies, buried within Boericke, have limited information and were rarely used, depriving homeopaths of valuable clinical experience. By making these remedies accessible, their usefulness can be expanded. Small or unknown remedies can yield brilliant results, as demonstrated in current homeopathic practice.
  • Remedy names have been updated to current scientific nomenclature standards.
  • Each remedy is accompanied by its Latin and common name.
  • Formulas for mineral and organic compounds are provided.
  • Families are categorized for plants, animals, fungi, bacteria, and viruses.

The term ‘Classic Materia Medica’ refers to work from 1790 – 1931, beginning with Hahnemann and concluding with Boericke and Boger. Afterward, a gap of around 50 years followed, during which minimal new information emerged. The current renaissance in homeopathy started around 1980. All new developments are built on the foundation of classic authors and their significant original work.

Concordant Reference is a compilation of the classic texts of:

  • T.F. Allen – Handbook of Materia Medica and Homeopathic Therapeutics and [partially] Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica – 10 volumes (1874 – 79)
  • T.F. Allen – A Primer of Materia Medica
  • Boericke – Pocket Manual of Homeopathic Materia Medica (1927)
  • Boger – Synoptic Key of the Materia Medica (1931)
  • Clarke – Dictionary of Homeopathic Materia Medica – 3 volumes (1900)
  • Cowperthwaite – Textbook of Materia Medica and Therapeutics (1891)
  • Hering – Guiding Symptoms – 10 volumes (1877 – 89)
  • Kent – Repertory (1877)
  • A. Lippe – Textbook of Materia Medica (1865)
  • Pulford – Homeopathic Materia Medica of Graphic Drug Pictures (approx. 1930)

Added to the previously included texts in Concordant are symptoms from T.F. Allen’s Handbook and his 10-volume Encyclopedia. The Sensation, Mind, and Dream sections have undergone significant expansion, reflecting recent advancements in case taking, case analysis, and prescribing, proving effective for contemporary homeopaths. Medium-sized and small remedies derive the most benefit from this added information. While Polychrests, already well-documented, yield little new material even after exhaustive review of Allen’s Encyclopedia, medium and small remedies, once marginalized, are now elevated from their limited utility to specific organ or local symptom indications. Users of the Concordant will recognize the familiar layout, including general sections, symptom divisions, and categories such as Generals, Mind, Dreams, Body areas, Modalities, Relations, and Causations. The standard repertory body sections have been further subdivided, separating ‘Food and drink’, ‘Heart’, ‘Limbs general’, ‘Limbs upper’, and ‘Limbs lower’ for enhanced reference. Each section features three possible divisions – Sensation, Pain, and Objective – with symptoms sourced from proving, intoxication, and clinical observation. The historical emphasis on clinical observations has shifted with the inclusion of more proving symptoms, achieving a more balanced approach. This integration has been facilitated by the inclusion of Allen’s Encyclopedia, which exclusively focuses on provings and intoxications. For the first time in any Materia Medica, Concordant Reference differentiates between remedies that were previously thought to be the same, assigning accurate symptoms to each one, allowing for more precise prescribing.

Examples of such pairs include:

  • Rhus tox and Rhus radicans
  • Bryonia alba and Bryonia dioica
  • Aloe socotrina and Aloe ferox
